I did not ever say to get rid of the mentally ill but that they should receive the help that they need before it gets to the point of them wanting to harm someone else or themselves. Law abiding gun owners are the only ones that gun laws affect! Criminals will find a way to hurt someone else without a gun like what happened in OK with a vehicle and a bomb made from easy to get items and the mass killings on 9/11 when they used box cutters. I doubt very much that more gun laws will change anything other than more illegal weapons. If the mother of the suspect in the Aurora theater shooting would have done something knowing her child had issues it may not have happened. She did not say “not my child” when called she said “you have the right person, I am sorry”! Helping those with mental illness early on could have changedthis immensely! I do agree with getting rid of the large magazines like banana clips and larger because those really are not necessary. I do agree with background checks but how do they expect to get the info about someone with mental illness that shold not have a gun? If they are judged by the court then that would be available but those that are not then how are they going to get that info with the HIPPA laws? I just think that the laws we have need to be followed better than adding more that will cause even more problems down the road. I also believe that those that are so gungho about gun banning after an awful incident should look at what happens everyday in this country. There are more people killed every day than at any of these mass shootings by illegal guns. Guns will not disappear so we need to force the law to do their job of getting the illegal ones off streets and not the ones that are held by law abiding citizens. There seems to be a large difference of opinion even within the law enforcement community. Most Sheriffs have the opposite opinion of Police Chiefs in many areas because they definitely see different things every day. We will have to agree to disagree on this issue I guess although I tend to agree with you on many issues.

I was bon and raised in ND and yes I know about New Town ND shooting and I also know that the supect committed suicide with a knife. If she was notcarrying the gun at the time then no it would not help. I never said hat we did not have violence here but that it was minimal compared to what they are talking about because most of us are taught to respect guns. I do not believe that banning guns will do what everyone seems to think. The shooting in New Town ND was with a hunting rifle not a hand gun or assault rifle.

North Dakota also had it’s own New Town, ND tragedy (actual name of Town) on Nov 18, 2012. Four children were at home with their grandmother when a young man with a gun killed three of the children and their grandmother. A fourth child- 12 year old Christian, survived by pretending to be dead under the body of his brother. What a terrible tragedy for their parents and all of the people of ND. According to the reports I read in the paper, the grandmother had a conceal and carry permit and was trained in the use of guns, but this did nothing to save her life or the life of her grandchildren. Hours late the young 21 year old gun man commited suicide. So yes ND is relatively safe, but we are not immune from gun violence. I am a citizen of ND all my life and I strongly support the propopsed gun legislation. I am a school teacher and work with young children. I am sickened and saddened every time I hear of these mass shootings. The safety of our children and citizens gathered in public places is more important than people’s rights to own semi-automatic weapons and I know it will never happen, but I would also like to see hand guns banned. I agree that violent video games and movies can influence an unstable loner who feesl the need to take revenge. We can’t do everything but the proposed legislation is not extreme it is necessary!

Very sorry but mental health is not the cause or problem with gun violence or death from weapons. The availability of guns to ALL Americans is the issue/problem. No matter how carefully you smoke a cigarette, it still causes cancer. Guns are America’s cancer on society.

If you believe mental illness to be a cause of gun deaths, then if you remove guns, you remove the problem…..unless your mind tells you to remove the mentally ill.

ND may be nothing like Chicago, yet, but so what? Is ND life any better or safer than Chicago when it comes to availability of weapons of mass destruction? Are the minds of ND residents free from mental illness? Or crime? Or guns being available to kill humans?

This is the United States Of America, not the United States Of ND. Each one of us living in The United States Of America should be affected by gun violence….even if it happens in Chicago.

Enjoy your nice safe existence In ND.

sorry about that I do tend to write faster than I should and not break up my paragraphs like I should. I wil ty to pay more attention to that. Thanks for the corrected numbers and you are right about a do nothing congress!

The actual vote total re-electing Boehner is another point in support of your position. He won 220-206, not 218. The other 12 Republicans abstained from voting, typical of this past do-nothing Congress.

(BTW, you may want to consider breaking your paragraphs with a line of white space. Having the whole post appear as a long column with occasional indents makes it harder to read for people like me with less than perfect eyesight.)
